Šakiai Church (Lithuania)

Weather…

The Church of St. John the Baptist in Šakiai is a prominent example of Modernist architecture in Lithuania, constructed between 1934 and 1940. It was designed by the renowned Lithuanian architect Vytautas Landsbergis-Žemkalnis, who harmonized modern construction principles with traditional sacral forms. The building stands on the site of a previous wooden church that was destroyed in 1914 during the early stages of World War I. The church's design is noted for its two monumental towers and clean, structural lines typical of the interwar period in Lithuania. Despite the onset of geopolitical tensions, the church was successfully consecrated in 1940. Throughout the Soviet era, it remained an active place of worship and a symbol of national identity for the local community. Today, it is recognized as a state-protected architectural monument and serves as the primary religious center for the Zanavykija region.
