Karšuva Plain (Lithuania)

Weather…

The Karšuva Plain in southwestern Lithuania is a fascinating, heavily forested sandy plain. Geologically, it is a post-glacial outwash plain created by massive volumes of glacial meltwater that deposited thick layers of sand across the region. A highly distinctive feature of this landscape is the presence of characteristic inland dunes, which were formed by wind action during drier periods following the ice age and are today almost entirely stabilized and covered by dense pine forests. In sharp contrast to these dry sandy soils, the lower-lying parts of the plain are heavily characterized by extensive wetlands, marshes, and peat bogs. This striking landscape diversity makes the Karšuva Plain a critically important ecological refuge. Numerous rare plant and animal species, particularly those uniquely adapted to sandy habitats or undisturbed wetlands, find first-rate conditions here.
