Plungė, located in the heart of Samogitia, is famous for its magnificent Oginski manor ensemble, often referred to as the 'Samogitian Versailles'. The 19th-century Neo-Renaissance palace is surrounded by one of Lithuania's largest and most beautiful landscape parks, featuring the monumental 'Central Oak'. Historically, the town was an important cultural center under the patronage of the Oginski family, who also founded a renowned music school there. In the surroundings of Plungė lies one of the most curious sights of the Cold War: the former Soviet Plokštinė missile base, which now serves as the Cold War Museum. The city itself has developed into a significant industrial site but carefully preserves its aristocratic heritage. The nearby Žemaitija National Park features numerous opportunities for nature observation on the shores of Lake Plateliai.
