Telšiai, the capital of Samogitia (Žemaitija), is picturesquely spread over seven hills on the shores of Lake Mastis. The city is the spiritual and cultural center of this western Lithuanian region and is known for its deep connection to Samogitian traditions. The Cathedral of St. Anthony of Padua, a late Baroque masterpiece with a rare two-story altar structure, dominates the historical center. Numerous bronze sculptures of bears, the symbol of Samogitia, can be found throughout the city, emphasizing the local identity. The surroundings are characterized by the hilly landscape of the Samogitian Highland and host the open-air museum of Samogitian village architecture. Telšiai received city rights in 1791 and has since steadily expanded its role as an educational and artistic center, particularly through the local faculty of arts. The city is considered one of the best-preserved historical sites in Lithuania.
