💡 Tips
- The Samogit monument 'Žemaitis' is the main landmark and a great starting point for exploring the rebuilt town center.
- Since the town was almost completely destroyed in WWII, expect functional post-war architecture in the center rather than a historic old town.
- Public transport connections are decent, but having a car is well-suited for flexibly exploring the nearby Dubysa Regional Park.
- If visiting outside the summer months, dress in layers as the weather in this region can get quite cold.
🍽 Food
Try these hearty potato pancakes stuffed with minced meat at local traditional taverns.
Fried bread with garlic and cheese is the great snack to accompany local beer at any pub.
You can find these savory meat-filled pastries in local bakeries for a quick and filling snack.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
Visit the market in the morning for fresh local produce, honey, and seasonal berries.
Look for small local shops in the center selling traditional Baltic amber jewelry and crafts.
A central green space great for a relaxing stroll or sitting on a bench under the trees.
Head just outside the city for peaceful walking trails along the scenic riverbanks.

Raseiniai is one of the oldest and most historically significant cities in Lithuania, recognized as the former historical capital of the proud Samogitia (Žemaitija) region. Founded as early as 1253, the city served for centuries as a vital political and cultural center of the Grand Duchy. One of the greatest tragedies to strike Raseiniai occurred during World War II, when almost the entire old town was leveled during fierce fighting. Today, the famous “Žemaitis” monument in the central square, a sculpture of a strong Samogitian man taming a bear, stands as a testament to the indomitable spirit of its residents. With around 10,000 inhabitants, the town gives a peaceful atmosphere near the A1 highway, enriched by the rebuilt Dominican monastery.
