Getting there
The highlands are primarily accessed via a network of steep, winding mountain passes starting from the lowlands. A capable 4x4 vehicle is strongly recommended, as many spectacular routes remain unpaved.
Best season
The warmer months of summer are generally best for unhindered driving and extensive high-altitude trekking. Winters are brutally cold, frequently causing road closures due to heavy snow and thick ice.
Terrain & paths
Visitors will encounter an awe-inspiring landscape of sweeping plateaus, incredibly deep valleys, and rugged peaks. Trekking paths are notoriously uneven, frequently lacking clear signage in remote areas.
What to bring
Versatile, windproof clothing layers are mandatory, regardless of the season, due to rapid temperature shifts. Durable hiking boots with strong ankle support are essential for traversing the rocky slopes.
Parking
Parking is mostly limited to small mountain villages, local tourist lodges, or widened sections along the mountain passes. Always use your parking brake on steep inclines and secure loose items.
