Maku (Iran)

Weather…

Maku is located in the extreme northwest of Iran, squeezed into a narrow valley between two towering cliff walls. This unique geographical setting gives the city an almost theatrical appearance, especially where houses seem to crouch directly under massive stone overhangs. The city serves as an important gateway between Iran, Turkey, and the Caucasus region. The historical highlight is the Kolah Farangi building, an elegant Qajar-era mansion featuring fine mirror work and stucco. In the vicinity of Maku lies the impressive Qara Kelisa (Black Church or St. Thaddeus Monastery), a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the world's oldest Christian monuments. The region gives a fascinating blend of Iranian, Armenian, and Azeri history. Maku is easily accessible via the transit road from Tabriz. Culinary-wise, the city reflects its border location, with influences from Turkish and Caucasian cuisines. The best time to visit is late spring or early autumn, as winters in this mountainous region can be very severe. Hikers and history buffs will find numerous old fortresses and pristine nature in the surrounding valleys waiting to be explored.
