Alborz Mountains (Iran)

Weather…

The Alborz Mountains constitute a spectacular geographical formation and a crucial orographic barrier in northern Iran, clearly delineating the arid Iranian Plateau to the south from the humid and fertile plains of the Caspian Sea to the north. This imposing mountain structure forces moisture-laden air masses blowing from the sea to release abundant precipitation on the northern slopes, which has led to the formation of the incredibly dense and lush pristine Hyrcanian forests. In striking contrast, the southern slopes exhibit a much drier and harsher steppe flora due to the rain shadow effect. The massif combines massive peaks of volcanic origin, such as the famous Damavand, with steep limestone cliffs and deep canyons carved by torrential rivers. Today, these mountains are a premier destination for recreation, offering excellent ski resorts and fabulous scenery to the residents of the capital region.
