Khor Virap (Armenia)

Weather…

Khor Virap is an Armenian Apostolic monastery located in the Ararat plain, close to the border with Turkey. It is one of the most sacred sites in the country, as it is where Saint Gregory the Illuminator was imprisoned for 13 years in a deep pit during the 4th century. King Tiridates III ordered his imprisonment before eventually converting to Christianity and declaring Armenia the world's first Christian state. The current Surb Gevorg chapel was built over the pit, which is still accessible to visitors via a steep ladder. The monastery provides one of the most spectacular views of Mount Ararat, which is the national symbol of Armenia. Due to its historical significance, Khor Virap remains a major destination for pilgrims and tourists alike.
