The Tehran Zoo, officially known as the Eram Zoo, is located within the Eram Park complex in the western part of the Iranian capital, covering an area of approximately five hectares. Established in 1992, it serves as the successor to the original royal zoo founded during the 19th-century reign of Nasser al-Din Shah. The facility currently houses more than 120 species of animals, ranging from native Iranian wildlife to exotic creatures from across the globe. A primary mission of the zoo is the conservation of endangered Iranian species, such as the Persian leopard and the Asiatic black bear. Recently, the zoo has engaged in international efforts to reintroduce the Asiatic lion, which had been extinct in the Iranian wild for decades. Despite the environmental challenges posed by Tehran's semi-arid climate, the enclosures have undergone continuous modernization to align with global animal welfare standards. Today, the zoo functions as a vital educational hub and a center for wildlife research in the Middle Eastern region.
