Iran Khodro (IKCO) is the largest automobile manufacturer in Iran and the entire MENA region (Middle East and North Africa). Founded in 1962 as Iran National, the company began production with the legendary Paykan, based on the British Hillman Hunter, which defined the country's roads for decades. Today, IKCO operates massive production facilities in Tehran and other provinces, turning out hundreds of thousands of vehicles annually. In addition to its own models like the Samand, Iran's first 'national' car, the company produces vehicles under license from international partners such as Peugeot and Renault. Technological development in recent years has focused on introducing natural gas powerplants and developing in-house platforms.
