Maragheh was once the capital of the Ilkhanate Empire under Hulagu Khan, evolving into a world-renowned center for science and astronomy in the 13th century. The city is primarily famous for its collection of five distinct brick towers, such as the Gunbad-i Kabud, adorned with intricate geometric patterns and early turquoise tilework. On a hill overlooking the city sit the ruins of the Maragheh Observatory, which was once the most advanced astronomical facility in the world. Visitors are drawn to these architectural gems and the lush fruit orchards that produce the region's famous apples. The best time to visit is from May to September when the mountain climate is most pleasant. It is easily reachable from Tabriz by car or train. Local cuisine highlights include high-quality honey and various dried fruits.
