Ovan Lake
Ovan Lake is a sparkling jewel set within the arid mountain landscape of the Alamut Valley. Sitting at an altitude of approximately 1,800 meters, it is fed exclusively by underground springs, which keeps its water remarkably clear and cool. Surrounded by four small villages and rugged cliffs, the lake provides a tranquil escape from the heat of the Iranian highlands. Reeds line the shores, creating a habitat for various bird species. During the summer, the lake is a favorite destination for picnics and leisurely boat rides. Its calm surface perfectly reflects the surrounding peaks, inviting visitors to relax in a serene setting. Fishing is also popular here, with trout being the most common catch. In winter, the lake's surface often freezes entirely, transforming the area into a silent, frozen wonderland. The surrounding greenery, including willows and fruit trees, creates a lush oasis contrasting with the barren mountains. Access is via the scenic road from Qazvin to Alamut, which features dramatic mountain passes. Simple camping spots and small kiosks for refreshments are available along the shore. The best time to visit is from May to September when the lakeside air is pleasantly mild. A stop at Ovan Lake is a natural addition to any trip exploring the Assassin Castles, as it lies conveniently along the valley's main route.
