Kandovan
Kandovan, tucked away at the foot of Mount Sahand, is one of the world's few inhabited troglodyte villages. Its distinctive cone-shaped rock formations, known as 'karaan,' were formed by thousands of years of erosion of volcanic tuff. The residents have meticulously carved their homes, stables, and storage rooms directly into these rocks, with some structures reaching up to four stories high. While it shares visual similarities with Cappadocia in Turkey, Kandovan's spirited living community makes it a uniquely authentic destination. Visitors are drawn to the village to witness this ancient lifestyle and to stay in specialized cave hotels that offer a one-of-a-kind lodging experience. The village is also famous for its natural mineral springs, whose water is believed to have therapeutic properties for kidney-related ailments. The cool mountain air and lush surroundings of the East Azerbaijan province provide a welcome escape from the summer heat found elsewhere in Iran. Local shops offer premium Sahand honey and medicinal herbs gathered from the nearby slopes. The best time to visit is from May to September, when the weather is great for exploring the steep, winding paths on foot. Located just 60 kilometers south of Tabriz, Kandovan is easily accessible for a day trip or an overnight stay that feels like stepping back in time.
