Azadi Tower (Iran)

Weather…

The Azadi Tower, originally named the Shahyad Tower, is Tehran's most prominent landmark, inaugurated in 1971 to commemorate the 2,500th anniversary of the Persian Empire. Designed by architect Hossein Amanat, the 45-meter-tall structure uniquely blends pre-Islamic Sassanid architectural motifs with classical Islamic styles. Its exterior is clad in over 8,000 blocks of white marble sourced from the Isfahan region, meticulously arranged in complex geometric patterns. Standing at the center of Azadi Square, one of the largest plazas in Iran, the tower houses an underground museum and an observation deck accessible via elevators and stairs. The main arch is a synthesis of the parabolic arch found in the ancient Taq-e Kasra and the pointed arches of the Islamic era. Following the 1979 Islamic Revolution, the monument was renamed the Azadi Tower (Freedom Tower) and continues to serve as a potent symbol of modern Iranian history. The surrounding landscape architecture is heavily influenced by traditional Persian garden design, featuring symmetrical water features and greenery.
