The Vértes Mountains host the unique architectural gem of Vérteskozma, a 'museum village' that preserves the traditional Swabian heritage of the 18th century. Founded in the 1740s by German settlers, the village features a remarkably uniform streetscape of white-washed stone houses that have survived largely unchanged. The surrounding landscape is dominated by dolomite cliffs and deep forested valleys, offering a distinct Mediterranean-like microclimate in some areas. Historically, these peaks were the site of the Battle of Vértes in 1051, where Hungarian forces successfully repelled the invading armies of Holy Roman Emperor Henry III. Following World War II, the village faced a tragic period as its German population was expelled, leading to near-total abandonment for several decades. This isolation paradoxically ensured the preservation of its historical structure, as modern developments never reached the valley. Today, Vérteskozma and the surrounding Vértes Peaks are part of a nature park, serving as a sanctuary for rare flora and a popular base for hiking enthusiasts exploring the Central Transdanubian region.
