Lake Bokod (Hungary)

Weather…

Lake Bokod is an artificial reservoir located near the town of Oroszlány in Komárom-Esztergom County, Hungary. Created in 1961, it served as a cooling pond for the Vértes Thermal Power Plant, which utilized the water to regulate the temperature of its machinery. Due to the constant inflow of warm water from the plant, the lake famously never froze, even in the harshest winter conditions, which allowed for year-round fishing activities. This unique feature led to the development of a floating village consisting of hundreds of wooden fishing huts built on stilts and connected to the shore by long wooden piers. Although the power plant officially ceased operations in late 2015, the lake remains a popular destination for photography and nature enthusiasts. The surrounding area is part of the Vértes hills, providing a scenic backdrop to the industrial and rustic charm of the lake. Currently, the lake covers approximately 160 hectares and continues to be managed for recreational purposes, though the water temperature has stabilized to natural levels since the plant's closure. The village is often referred to as the Hungarian Maldives due to its distinctive visual appeal.
