Tata Castle (Hungary)

Weather…

Tata Castle is one of Hungary's most significant medieval fortresses, picturesquely situated on the shores of Lake Öreg. The castle's construction began in the late 14th century by the Lackfi family and was later expanded by King Sigismund of Luxembourg into a magnificent royal residence. It reached its peak under King Matthias Corvinus, who transformed the building into a Renaissance-style summer palace. During the Ottoman wars, it served as a vital border fortress, frequently changing hands between imperial and Turkish forces. In the 18th century, it was acquired by the Esterházy family, who rebuilt parts of it in a Romantic style. Today, the building houses the Kuny Domokos Museum, featuring extensive local history and archaeological collections, including the famous Tata faience. The surrounding moat and the proximity of the lake make it one of the most atmospheric historic sites in the country.
