Zsámbék is a historically rich town in Pest County, set in the scenic Zsámbék Basin, covering an area of 33.66 square kilometers. The town is most renowned for the awe-inspiring ruins of its Premonstratensian monastery, constructed between 1220 and 1234 in late Romanesque and early Gothic styles. A devastating earthquake in 1763 severely damaged the structure, leaving behind a monumental stone skeleton that serves as one of Hungary's most iconic medieval relics. Following the Ottoman occupation, Zsámbék was repopulated primarily by Swabian (German) settlers in the 18th century. They deeply influenced the town's architecture and viticultural traditions before their tragic mass expulsion following World War II. The early Baroque-style Zichy Castle adds to the town's historical depth. Granted town status in 2009, Zsámbék is now a prestigious cultural destination and a highly sought-after residential suburb located roughly 30 kilometers west of Budapest.
