El Ángel Ecological Reserve (Ecuador)

Weather…

The El Ángel Ecological Reserve is located in northern Ecuador in the Carchi province, covering about 15,715 hectares. Established in 1992, the reserve is world-renowned for its unique paramo ecosystem dominated by the giant Frailejones (Espeletia pycnophylla). These fuzzy-leaved plants can grow up to seven meters tall, creating a prehistoric-looking landscape that remains misty and damp year-round. The elevation within the reserve ranges from 3,644 to 4,768 meters above sea level, making it one of the highest protected areas in the country. Key features include the El Voladero lagoons, a group of high-altitude glacial lakes that provide a sanctuary for wildlife such as the Andean condor and the tiny Pudu deer. El Ángel serves as a critical 'water tower' for the region, as its spongy soils and specialized vegetation capture and store vast amounts of water for the surrounding valleys.
