Weather…

Lake Yahuarcocha, whose name means "Lake of Blood" in Kichwa, is a historically and ecologically significant body of water located near the city of Ibarra. The name commemorates a bloody 15th-century battle in which the Inca Empire, led by Huayna Cápac, conquered the local Caranqui tribes. Geologically, Yahuarcocha is a lake of glacial origin, formed approximately 10,000 years ago during the retreat of the last ice age. Situated at an elevation of 2,220 meters, it covers a surface area of about 2.5 square kilometers. Today, it is well-known for the José Tobar Tobar international racetrack that encircles the lake, hosting major motorsport events. Environmentally, the lake suffers from eutrophication issues caused by nutrient runoff and limited water circulation, requiring ongoing conservation efforts. Despite these challenges, it remains a vital recreational area and a habitat for various duck species and migratory birds. Archaeological sites along the lake's edge provide ongoing insights into the pre-Columbian Caranqui culture that once thrived in the region.
