Vidoški Fortress (Bosnia and Herzegovina)

Weather…

Vidoški Fortress, perched majestically on a limestone ridge above the historic town of Stolac, is one of the most impressive fortifications in Herzegovina. The history of this massive defensive structure dates back to late antiquity, but it experienced its golden age in the Middle Ages as the center of the historic region of Hum (later Herzegovina). The first written mentions date from the 15th century, when the fortress belonged to the powerful Duke Stjepan Vukčić Kosača. The current appearance is a fascinating architectural mosaic, as the Ottomans continuously expanded the complex after their conquest in 1471. The fortress walls, which adapt to the natural relief of the hill, stretch over a considerable length and enclose an area of more than 20,000 square meters. With a total of eleven watchtowers, numerous embrasures, huge cisterns, and ruins of residential buildings, Vidoški served not only as a military outpost but as an independent small town. The ruins offer a wide-open view of the Bregava River and the Ottoman architecture of Stolac.
