Kupres is a small town and municipality in Canton 10 of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, situated on a high karst plateau at an elevation of over 1,100 meters. The region is characterized by its harsh mountain climate, often referred to as 'Bosnia's Siberia,' making it a premier destination for winter sports in the country. The ski center on Mount Čajuša is a major regional attraction, drawing visitors every winter. Historically, Kupres was the site of significant strategic battles during the Bosnian War in 1992 and 1994, the remnants of which can still be observed in the landscape. A unique cultural highlight is the 'Strljanica' traditional mowing competition, where men compete using hand scythes, a tradition centuries old that has been recognized by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage. The Kupres plateau (Kupreško polje) spans about 93 square kilometers, providing vast grazing lands for livestock during the summer months.
