Mrkonjić Grad is located in the northwestern region of Republika Srpska and holds immense historical and cultural significance for the entirety of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The city gained profound historical relevance in 1943 as the founding site of ZAVNOBiH, where the firm foundations for modern Bosnian statehood were officially laid during the harsh conditions of World War II. Geographically, the city captivates visitors with its beautiful location deep within a broad valley entirely surrounded by high mountains. The local economy relies significantly on a strong, resilient wood processing industry as well as a productive metalworking sector, while local tourism benefits greatly from the nearby, stunningly beautiful Balkana Lake.
