Travnik has an exceptionally rich and significant history, serving as the glorious capital of the Ottoman viziers in Bosnia from 1699 to 1850. The architectural landscape of the city is dominated by the imposing medieval fortress, which perches majestically above the narrow valley of the Lašva River. Numerous old mosques, historical madrasas, and traditional Ottoman residential houses characterize the well-preserved old town center. Travnik is also the birthplace of Nobel laureate in literature Ivo Andrić, whose childhood home now serves as a fascinating museum, attracting literary enthusiasts from all over the world. Culinarily, the region is famous far beyond its borders for the highly acclaimed Travnik cheese (Vlašićki sir), which is produced on the vast pastures of the nearby Vlašić Mountains.
