Ključ Old Town
The Old Town of Ključ is situated on a prominent cliff overlooking the Sana River and is inextricably linked to the end of the medieval Bosnian Kingdom. In 1463, the last Bosnian King, Stjepan Tomašević, sought refuge here from the advancing Ottoman forces. Following a siege, he was captured, marking the final collapse of medieval Bosnian independence. The fortress itself comprises a complex system of towers and defensive walls divided into three sections: the upper town, the lower town, and the outer defense works (tabor). Archaeological findings confirm that the site has been inhabited since Roman times, highlighting its long-term strategic significance. Today, Ključ is a national monument and a site of great symbolic importance for national identity, representing the last stand of the Bosnian royalty.
