Klekovača (Bosnia and Herzegovina)

Weather…

Klekovača is the highest mountain in the northwestern part of Bosnia and Herzegovina, located southeast of the town of Drvar. Its highest point, Velika Klekovača, stands at 1,962 meters. The mountain is famous for its dense and untouched coniferous forests, with its name derived from the dwarf mountain pine (Klek) that thrives in the area. Botanically, Klekovača is of immense value as it is one of the few places in the Dinarides where the rare Edelweiss (Runolist) grows on rocky ridges. The landscape features rugged limestone formations and deep sinkholes, typical of the Dinaric karst. Near the summit lies the Lom Virgin Forest (Lomska Prašuma), one of Europe's few remaining primeval forests, under strict protection since 1956. Historically utilized for strategic military purposes, the mountain is now a focus for ecological preservation and eco-tourism. Hikers are drawn to its challenging ascents and the wide views reaching as far as the Adriatic Sea and the peaks of central Bosnia.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Reaching this prominent mountain in western Bosnia usually involves driving through remote forestry roads from nearby settlements to reach the trailheads situated in the lower forested zones.
📅
Best season
Summer and early autumn provide the most favorable conditions for hiking, while winter brings severe cold, heavy snow, and a high risk of avalanches on the steep, barren rocky peaks.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The trails progress from dense, shaded coniferous forests in the lower sections to exposed, rocky inclines covered with tricky dwarf pine bushes near the demanding summit.
🎒
What to bring
Tough hiking boots with ankle support are essential for the rocky upper sections, along with long trousers to protect against dwarf pine branches, and reliable waterproof outerwear.
🅿️
Parking
Vehicles are typically parked in small, unmarked clearings or designated forestry staging areas where the unpaved access roads end and the steep footpaths begin.
⚠️
Safety
Hikers should beware of sudden mists enveloping the rocky peaks, which can obscure the trail, and must remain vigilant of local wildlife such as bears roaming the dense lower forests.
⏱️
Time needed
Conquering the highest elevations and returning safely generally takes five to eight hours, requiring an early morning start to ensure completion well before sunset.
