Bužim Old Town
The Old Town of Bužim, located in the extreme northwest of Bosnia and Herzegovina, is home to one of the most unusual and heavily fortified castles in the region. Built in the 14th century on a prominent hill, the fortress is characterized by an irregular floor plan and four massive, round corner towers, giving it the appearance of a formidable monolithic blockhouse. For centuries, Bužim was the ancestral seat of the influential Croatian noble family Keglević. Due to its strategic location near the modern border with Croatia, the castle was a constant bone of contention. After being conquered by the Ottoman Empire in the late 16th century, it was extensively modernized and served as a crucial military outpost against the advancing Habsburg Monarchy. Within the thick walls, alongside barracks and armories, there was also a mosque and residential buildings for the garrison. Today, the impressive stone ruins are a significant national monument that vividly documents the eventful border history of the Krajina region.
