Ključ Fortress (Bosnia and Herzegovina)

Weather…

Ključ Fortress, dramatically situated on a steep cliff high above the gorge of the Sana River, holds one of the most important places in Bosnian history. The name "Ključ" literally means "Key," underscoring its extreme strategic importance in controlling the Sana valley. The complex consists of an extensive network of defensive walls, towers, and a central donjon, combining both medieval and Ottoman architectural elements. Ključ achieved particularly sad notoriety in the early summer of 1463: during the Ottoman advance, the last Bosnian king, Stjepan Tomašević, fled to this nearly impregnable castle. After a harsh, albeit short, siege by Sultan Mehmed II, the king surrendered the fortress under the assurance of safe passage, a promise that was broken, as he was executed shortly thereafter, sealing the final end of the medieval Bosnian state. Today, visitors can explore the well-preserved ruins and enjoy a sweeping view over the landscape.
