The Lom Forest Reserve is located in the Klekovača mountain massif in western Bosnia and Herzegovina. Spanning approximately 297 hectares, it is one of the few remaining examples of pristine primeval forest in Europe. The flora is dominated primarily by beech, fir, and spruce, with many trees reaching several centuries in age and displaying monumental dimensions. Since its establishment in 1956, the reserve has served as a strictly protected zone for scientific research and the preservation of natural forest succession without human interference. The topography is characterized by steep slopes and karst formations, creating a diverse microhabitat structure. Numerous animal species, including brown bears, wolves, and rare birds of prey, find refuge here. The ecosystem is renowned for its vast biomass of deadwood, which provides an essential foundation for fungi, insects, and birds. Lom serves as a vital ecological reference system for the study of forest ecosystems under natural conditions.
