Blidinje Lake (Bosnia and Herzegovina)

Weather…

Blidinje Lake is the largest mountain lake in Bosnia and Herzegovina, situated within the Blidinje Nature Park. It is located at an altitude of approximately 1,184 meters above sea level, located between the high mountain ranges of Čvrsnica and Vran. The surface area of the lake varies significantly with the seasons, ranging from 2.5 to 6 square kilometers, though it remains quite shallow with an average depth of 1.5 to 2 meters. Geologically, it was formed by glacial activities and later stabilized in the 19th century when local inhabitants blocked karst sinkholes to retain water for livestock. The surrounding area is famous for the endemic Bosnian pine (Pinus heldreichii) and numerous medieval tombstone graveyards known as Stećci, which are part of UNESCO World Heritage. During winter months, the lake often freezes completely, creating a starkly beautiful alpine landscape.
