Čvrsnica Mountain (Bosnia and Herzegovina)

Weather…

Čvrsnica is one of the highest mountain massifs in Bosnia and Herzegovina, situated in northern Herzegovina, west of the Neretva River. Forming a central part of the Blidinje Nature Park, the range culminates at Pločno peak with an elevation of 2,228 meters. Its most famous geological feature is 'Hajdučka vrata' (Outlaws' Gate), a natural limestone arch formed by millennia of erosion, which is protected as a national natural monument. The landscape of Čvrsnica is characterized by profound gorges, such as the Diva Grabovica canyon, vast karst plateaus, and some of the highest vertical cliffs in the Balkans, dropping over 1,000 meters. The vegetation spans from thick coniferous forests to high alpine meadows hosting numerous endemic floral species. The mountain provides a vital sanctuary for a healthy population of Balkan chamois, as well as wolves and various birds of prey. Čvrsnica is a major hub for hiking and winter sports, with the Risovac ski center located at its foothills. Preserving the ecological integrity of this area is critical for biodiversity conservation and the advancement of sustainable tourism in the region.
