Gasa Dzong
Gasa Dzong, officially named Tashi Thongmon Dzong, is a formidable fortress located in the remote Gasa district of northern Bhutan. It was established in the mid-17th century, around 1648, by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal to defend the country against invasions from Tibet. Architecturally, the dzong is unique for its circular shape and the presence of three strategically positioned watchtowers known as Ta Dzongs. Perched on a high ridge, it commands an impressive view of the snow-capped Himalayan peaks, including Mount Masanggang. The fortress serves as the administrative and religious hub of the Gasa district, which is well-known for its pristine natural environment and therapeutic hot springs (Gasa Tsachhu). Inside, the complex contains several sacred temples and shrines dedicated to the protector deities of the region. The annual Gasa Tshechu festival is a significant local event where monks perform ritual mask dances to invoke blessings. Due to its high altitude and secluded location, Gasa Dzong is one of the most challenging historical sites to reach, preserving its tranquil and ancient atmosphere. It stands as a testament to Bhutan's defensive history and the enduring legacy of the Zhabdrung.
