Bagerhat (Bangladesh)

Weather…

Bagerhat is a district located at the confluence of the Ganges and Brahmaputra rivers, globally recognized for the Historic Mosque City of Bagerhat. Founded in the 15th century by the Sufi saint and Turkish general Ulugh Khan Jahan, the city was originally known as Khalifatabad. It features a remarkable concentration of Islamic monuments built in an unplastered, exposed brick style unique to the region. The centerpiece of this UNESCO World Heritage site is the Sixty Dome Mosque (Shait Gumbad Mosque), which actually has 77 domes and is the largest historical mosque in Bangladesh. The area encompasses over 50 Islamic monuments, including the Mausoleum of Khan Jahan Ali, Nine Dome Mosque, and Singar Mosque. The architectural style blends local Bengali elements with Sultanate designs, adapted to the wet delta environment. Bagerhat is situated about 25 kilometers southeast of Khulna and can be reached by bus from Dhaka or Khulna. It is often combined with a trip to the nearby Sundarbans mangrove forest. The archaeological sites are best explored during the cooler dry season from November to March.
