Motithang Takin Preserve (Bhutan)

Weather…

The Motithang Takin Preserve in Thimphu is a specialized enclosure dedicated to the protection of the Takin, the national animal of Bhutan. Originally conceived as a small zoo, it was later converted into a more open reserve after the fourth king decided that captivity was not compatible with Bhutanese religious values. The preserve covers an area of approximately 8.4 acres in a forested area above the city. The Takin is a unique ungulate that looks like a cross between a cow and a goat and is deeply rooted in Bhutanese mythology. In addition to takins, the sanctuary also houses some other animal species, such as muntjac and sambar deer. It provides visitors a rare opportunity to observe these unusual animals up close in a natural setting. The area is surrounded by pine forests and serves as a peaceful retreat not far from the city center.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The preserve is technically accessible year-round, but the pleasant spring and crisp autumn months usually provide the most comfortable weather conditions for slowly walking around the large enclosed forested areas and viewing the unique wildlife.
🌅
Best time of day
Early morning is widely considered the absolute optimal time for observation, as the somewhat sluggish takins tend to gather near the outer fences for feeding before retreating much deeper into the cool forest shelter during the bright midday hours.
📜
Etiquette
Visitors must strictly remain completely outside the sturdy fenced enclosures at all times, purposefully avoid making any sudden loud noises that could startle the animals, and completely refrain from attempting to offer them any outside food items.
🎒
What to bring
Exceptionally comfortable walking shoes are highly suggested for thoroughly exploring the slightly sloped dirt pathways around the entire perimeter, along with a decent pair of binoculars for clearly spotting animals resting comfortably further back in the trees.
🧭
Getting there
The tranquil preserve is beautifully situated just a short, scenic drive from the central core of Thimphu, making it exceptionally easily accessible via affordable local taxis or as an integrated part of a comprehensive guided city sightseeing itinerary.
🦌
What to expect
The peculiar takins can be remarkably slow-moving and sometimes quite elusive within their extensively large naturalistic habitat, so waiting very quietly at several different elevated vantage points often yields the most deeply rewarding viewing experiences over time.
