Dochula Pass (Bhutan)

Weather…

Dochula Pass is one of Bhutans most famous mountain passes, located on the main road between the capital Thimphu and the Punakha valley. At an elevation of approximately 3,100 meters, the pass has wide-open panoramic views of the snow-capped Eastern Himalayan peaks on clear days, including Masanggang and Tsendagang. The most distinctive feature of the pass is the 108 memorial chortens (stupas), known as Druk Wangyal Chortens, built on a central hill. These stupas were commissioned by Queen Mother Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck to honor the Bhutanese soldiers who died during the 2003 military operations against Indian insurgents. Adjacent to the stupas is the Druk Wangyal Lhakhang temple, inaugurated in 2008 to celebrate the centenary of the monarchy. The pass serves as both a site of remembrance and a spiritual center where the annual Dochula Druk Wangyal Festival is held.
