Sirajganj is a significant industrial and transport hub in northern Bangladesh, located on the west bank of the Jamuna River. It is famously known as the gateway to North Bengal and is connected to the rest of the country via the Bangabandhu Bridge, one of the longest bridges in the region. The city has a long history of commerce, particularly in the handloom industry, being one of the largest producers of Lungis and other traditional textiles in the country. Sirajganj is also a vital center for the dairy industry, hosting major milk processing plants that supply dairy products to the entire nation. Historically, the region was an important administrative center during the British period and played a key role in various political movements in Bengal. The Jamuna River, while providing essential water for agriculture and transport, also poses a significant challenge due to seasonal flooding and erosion.
