Laya is an isolated, high-altitude settlement located at 3800 meters in the Gasa district, situated just below the Tibetan border. It is home to the indigenous Layap people, a semi-nomadic community known for their distinct language, customs, and the unique conical bamboo hats worn by the women. The village is surrounded by alpine meadows and snow-capped peaks, including Tsenda Kang. Visiting Laya features a rare look into a traditional pastoral lifestyle focused primarily on yak herding and harvesting cordyceps, a highly valuable medicinal fungus. The Royal Highlander Festival, held here annually in October, showcases traditional sports, animal parades, and local arts. The village remains off the grid regarding modern roads, relying on solar power and mule tracks for transport. Reaching Laya requires a multi-day trek from Gasa, often forming part of the famous Snowman Trek or the Laya-Gasa route. The best trekking windows are April to May and September to October to avoid the heavy monsoon rains and deep winter snows.
