Gangkhar Puensum (Bhutan)

Weather…

Gangkhar Puensum, at 7,570 meters, is Bhutan's highest mountain and the highest unclimbed mountain in the world. Its name means 'The Three Spiritual Siblings.' The mountain is located in northern Bhutan on the disputed border with China (Tibet). Since 1994, the Bhutanese government has prohibited mountaineering on peaks over 6,000 meters out of respect for local religious beliefs, which hold these mountains as sacred abodes of gods and spirits. Before the ban, four unsuccessful expeditions attempted to conquer it in 1985 and 1986. The mountain thus remains a symbol of the pristine and spiritual nature of the Himalayas. Its massive, glacier-covered form dominates the landscape and feeds important rivers in the region. Its inaccessibility and protected status have helped to preserve the unique alpine flora and fauna in its vicinity.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Since this peak is considered sacred and mountaineering is officially banned here, direct access to the mountain massif is not possible. However, travelers can approach the region via demanding trekking routes in the northern part of the country to admire the mountain from a distance.
📅
Best season
For trekking tours in the surrounding valleys, the months of October and November, as well as April and May, generally offer the best and most stable weather conditions. During the monsoon season, views of the peaks are severely limited and trails are often impassable.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The terrain of the remote trekking routes at this extreme altitude is extremely rugged, steep, and dominated by glaciers, moraines, and rocky deserts. The unpaved, narrow paths require the highest alpine surefootedness and a very strong physical constitution.
🎒
What to bring
A multi-day trek requires complete high-altitude gear, warm, windproof clothing layered appropriately, and robust trekking boots. Because you are often far from any infrastructure, sleeping bags rated for extreme sub-zero temperatures and comprehensive emergency kits are mandatory.
🅿️
Parking
All motorized travel ends long before the gates of the high mountains in the starting villages. Vehicles are left there, while the transport of equipment from this point onwards is traditionally continued with pack animals or local porters.
⚠️
Safety
The greatest danger at this altitude is altitude sickness, which is why sufficient and careful acclimatization can be life-saving. All tours must strictly be conducted with licensed and experienced local guides to properly handle unpredictable weather drops.
⏱️
Time needed
To even see the mountain from afar from good vantage points requires extensive trekking tours. Such expeditions into the remote northern regions typically take anywhere between ten days and three weeks to complete safely.
