Thimphu Valley (Bhutan)

Weather…

The Thimphu Valley is the most populous valley in Bhutan and home to the capital city, Thimphu. It stretches along the Wang Chhu river at an altitude of about 2,320 meters. Thimphu is a unique capital, being the only one in the world without traffic lights; traffic is directed by policemen. The valley displays a fascinating blend of tradition and modernity. Here, you can find important government buildings, the royal palace, and at the same time, traditional markets and craft workshops. Major attractions include the giant Buddha Dordenma, a 51.5-meter-tall statue overlooking the valley, the Tashichho Dzong, which is the seat of the government and the central monastic body, and the National Memorial Chorten, a constant site of prayer. The valley is also a center for arts and culture, with the National Library, the Institute for Zorig Chusum (School of the 13 Arts), and the Textile Museum.

Best season
The handy times to visit are spring (March to May) for the floral blooms and autumn (September to November) for clear mountain views. Winters are sunny but cold, while the summer months bring the monsoon season to the valley.

Terrain & paths
The valley sits at an altitude of over 2,300 meters and is surrounded by forested mountains. The valley floor is flatter and densely populated, while the surrounding slopes offer numerous hiking trails to monasteries and viewpoints in steeper terrain.

What to bring
Due to the high altitude, layered clothing is recommended as temperatures can fluctuate greatly. Sturdy footwear is needed for hikes to monasteries, and respectful, modest clothing must be worn when visiting any religious or cultural sites.
