Tongshanjiabu (Bhutan)

Weather…

Tongshanjiabu is a massive and complex mountain peak on the border between Bhutan and Tibet (China). At 7,207 meters, it is one of the highest unclimbed mountains in the world. The peak is located in the remote Lunana region and is part of the greater Himalayan main crest. The mountain has a complex topography with multiple ridges and subsidiary peaks. Its ascent has never been seriously attempted due to its political location on a disputed border, its extreme remoteness, and high objective dangers such as avalanches and icefalls. The Bhutanese government has banned mountaineering on peaks above 6,000 meters out of respect for local religious beliefs, which further solidifies Tongshanjiabu's unclimbed status. The landscape around the mountain is one of the wildest and most inaccessible in the entire Himalayas, characterized by vast glacier systems and deep, uninhabited valleys.

Getting there
This massive border peak is extremely difficult to access and requires special permits. Expeditions typically start deep in Bhutan's interior and involve long approach marches on foot.
📅
Best season
Climbing attempts take place almost exclusively during the short windows before or after the monsoon (April-May or September-October). Weather at these high altitudes is extremely unpredictable.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The terrain is high-alpine, characterized by dangerous crevasses and vast ice fields. The slopes are extremely steep and require advanced technical climbing skills for a safe ascent.
🎒
What to bring
Full mountaineering gear including crampons, ice axes, ropes, and thermal protection for extreme sub-zero temperatures is mandatory. Oxygen supplies and satellite phones are also essential.
🅿️
Parking
There are no parking facilities anywhere near the mountain. Vehicles are left in the last accessible village in the lower valleys, from where the multi-day trek to the base camp begins.
⚠️
Safety
Crevasses, avalanches, and altitude sickness pose life-threatening risks. An ascent is only feasible for elite mountaineers with professional logistics and experienced local high-altitude guides.
⏱️
Time needed
An expedition to Tongshanjiabu typically lasts several weeks, including mandatory acclimatization phases. The approach march to the mountain alone can take a full week or even longer.
