Shahbuz State Reserve (Azerbaijan)

Weather…

The Shahbuz State Nature Reserve, established in June 2003, is located in the Shahbuz District of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic of Azerbaijan. It covers an area of approximately 3,139 hectares on the slopes of the Zangezur mountain range at elevations reaching 2,500 meters. The reserve was primarily created to protect the unique ecosystem of the high mountain regions, including oak forests and diverse alpine flora. One of its most famous features is Lake Batabat, a tectonic lake known for its floating peat islands and medicinal springs located in its vicinity. The territory serves as a habitat for numerous rare and endangered species, such as the bezoar goat, brown bear, and various birds of prey. Research conducted here focuses on biodiversity conservation and the monitoring of over 2,800 plant species, many of which possess significant medicinal properties used in traditional science.
