Alinja Castle (Azerbaijan)

Weather…

Alinja Castle, often referred to as the 'Machu Picchu of Azerbaijan', stands on a steep mountain peak in the Nakhchivan region. The fortress has been known since the 1st century and gained worldwide fame through its heroic resistance against the troops of Tamerlane in the late 14th century. The defenders held out against the siege of Tamerlane's massive army for an impressive 14 years, from 1386 to 1401. Due to its extreme location on the rocks, it was considered almost impregnable and was an important administrative center of the Eldiguzid dynasty. The castle featured complex water reservoirs and storage rooms carved into the rock to survive long sieges. Recently, extensive restoration work has been carried out to make the monumental staircases and walls accessible to visitors again. Its strategic position provides a dramatic panoramic view of the Aras Valley.
