Nakhchivan is the capital of the autonomous republic of the same name, an Azerbaijani exclave separated from the mainland by Armenian territory and bordering Iran and Turkey. The city lies roughly nine hundred and fifty metres above sea level on an arid plateau beside the Aras River and counts among the oldest continuously inhabited places in the Caucasus, according to legend it was founded by Noah himself after the Great Flood. Its emblem is the octagonal Mausoleum of Momine Khatun built in 1186, a masterpiece of Islamic architecture by the architect Ajami Nakhchivani. Other highlights include the Gamigaya archaeological site with prehistoric petroglyphs, the Duzdag salt mine with its underground halotherapy clinic, and numerous domed mausoleums and caravanserais recalling the area's Silk Road past.
