Momine Khatun Mausoleum (Azerbaijan)

Weather…

The Momine Khatun Mausoleum is an outstanding example of medieval architecture in the city of Nakhchivan. It was built in 1186 by the famous architect Ajami ibn Abubakr Nakhchivani in honor of Momine Khatun, the wife of the local Atabeg ruler. The mausoleum is a decagonal tower made of fired brick, which originally reached a height of 34 meters but now stands at about 25 meters. Each of the ten facets is decorated with intricate geometric patterns of brick and turquoise tiles, as well as Kufic inscriptions, making it a masterpiece of Islamic art. The interior is simpler and contains the crypt. The mausoleum is a symbol of the Nakhchivan school of architecture and a testament to the highly developed craftsmanship and artistic flair of the Seljuk era.
