Mount Kapudzhukh (Azerbaijan)

Weather…

Mount Kapudzhukh (also known as Kaputjugh) is the highest peak of the Zangezur Mountains, reaching 3,905 meters and situated on the border between Azerbaijan's Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic and Armenia. The mountain is an impressive massif composed of granite and other igneous rocks, shaped by deep glacial valleys and sharp ridges. Its slopes host small glaciers and perennial snowfields that remain even through the summer months. The region around Kapudzhukh is known for its extreme climatic conditions and sparse but botanically significant alpine flora. Historically, the Zangezur range served as both a formidable barrier and a passage for trade routes between Iran and the Caucasus. The local wildlife includes rare species such as the Bezoar ibex and the Caucasian snowcock. Due to its remote location and sensitive border status, the mountain remains largely undeveloped for tourism, preserving its pristine natural state. It marks the southernmost major high-altitude point in Azerbaijan.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Reaching the foothills typically begins with a drive from Nakhchivan City towards the rugged border regions. The final approach to the climbing routes involves hiking from remote, high-altitude mountain villages.
📅
Best season
The optimal window for hiking and climbing is during the brief summer months from July to early September. Snow covers the upper elevations for most of the year, making winter attempts highly technical and dangerous.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
Ascending this prominent peak involves navigating steep, scree-covered slopes and exposed rocky ridges. The environment is barren and alpine, demanding significant physical exertion to negotiate the challenging gradients.
🎒
What to bring
Sturdy trekking boots, adjustable trekking poles, and reliable windproof outerwear are strictly necessary for the ascent. Climbers must also pack sufficient water, as alpine sources can be scarce during the drier summer period.
🅿️
Parking
Vehicles are generally left at the highest accessible villages or near informal trailheads with the permission of local residents. Security is usually maintained by the closely-knit local communities in these border areas.
⚠️
Safety
Because this peak sits directly on a sensitive international border, strict compliance with military zones and permits is mandatory. Hikers should be prepared for rapid weather changes and the risks associated with high altitudes.
⏱️
Time needed
A successful summit push from the highest base villages typically takes a full, exhausting day of hiking. A multi-day itinerary is recommended to allow for adequate acclimatization and secure travel to the region.
