Momine Khatun Mausoleum (Azerbaijan)

Weather…

The Momine Khatun Mausoleum in Nakhchivan is one of the most magnificent monuments of medieval Azerbaijani architecture and a crown jewel of the Nakhchivan architectural school. It was completed in 1186 by the renowned architect Ajami ibn Abu Bakr on the orders of the Ildegizid ruler Jahan Pahlawan to honor his first wife, Momine Khatun. The decagonal tower was originally 34 meters tall, though it stands at approximately 25 meters today following the loss of its original outer conical dome. The exterior walls are entirely covered with intricate geometric patterns and Kufic inscriptions composed of baked bricks and turquoise glazed tiles. Internally, the structure consists of a vaulted crypt below ground and a tall upper chamber. This mausoleum is celebrated globally as a masterpiece of brickwork and mathematical precision, representing the height of the Atabeg dynasty's cultural influence. It remains a major historical landmark and a symbol of the enduring architectural legacy of the Nakhchivan region.
