St. Wolfgang lies on the northern shore of Lake Wolfgangsee at the foot of Mount Schafberg and is one of the most famous villages in the Salzkammergut. The town looks back on over 1,000 years of history as a pilgrimage site; the late-Gothic pilgrimage church with the famous double-winged altar by Michael Pacher is an art-historical gem. It gained worldwide fame through the operetta 'The White Horse Inn' (Im Weißen Rössl), whose real-life inspiration, the White Horse Inn hotel, stands directly on the lakeshore. A major attraction is the Schafbergbahn, Austria's steepest steam cog railway, which has been climbing to the 1,783-meter summit since 1893, offering panoramic views over 13 lakes. In winter, the 'Wolfgangsee Advent' charms visitors with a giant floating lantern. Access is typically via the B158 road from Salzburg or Bad Ischl, complemented by the Wolfgangsee ferry service.
