Gmunden is situated on the northern shore of Lake Traunsee in Upper Austria's Salzkammergut region and is world-renowned for its ceramics tradition. The "Gmundner Keramik," featuring its characteristic green-flamed décor, has been produced here since the 17th century and defines the town's cultural identity. One of its most famous landmarks is Schloss Ort, a lake castle located on a small island in Lake Traunsee, accessible via a wooden bridge. Historically, Gmunden profited from the salt trade, which turned the town into a wealthy commercial center. The architecture of the old town reflects this prosperity through magnificent townhouses and the parish church with its Baroque high altar. Geographically, the setting between the lake and the prominent Traunstein mountain provides spectacular views and numerous recreational opportunities. The town was already a favorite summer resort for nobility and artists during the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. Today, Gmunden combines modern quality of life with deeply rooted customs and craftsmanship.
