Wels is the second-largest city in Upper Austria and is home to a settlement history reaching back to the Neolithic period. During the Roman era, the city rose to prominence as Ovilava, serving as the capital of the province of Noricum Ripense and becoming one of the most important urban centers north of the Alps. A major historical event occurred in 1519 when Emperor Maximilian I passed away in Wels Castle, cementing the city's place in Habsburg history. Today, Wels is renowned as a major trade fair city, with the Messe Wels tradition dating back to the 19th century. The inner city's architecture is defined by the late Gothic Ledererturm and magnificent townhouses featuring Baroque facades. Its location on the Traun River historically facilitated trade and has established the city as a modern logistical hub with a robust industrial foundation.
